48 hours on Ilha Grande in Brazil

Ilha Grande is a great getaway on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, and is just a 3 hour trip from the capital city. To get there, you will need to catch a van or bus to Conceição do Jacareí or Angra dos Reis, and from there a ferry or fast boat to the island, as cars are not allowed on the island. The only way to get there is by sea!

If you only have 2 days to visit this paradise, our tip is to book a  a hotel or B&B near the harbour, in Vila Abraao, in order to make your arrival easier. We recommend the Pousada Recanto das Estrelas, that’s just 400m from the port, and is the perfect spot for couples or groups of friends traveling together.

Since 48 hours is not even close to enough to get to know every little corner of this heaven on earth, we advise you take a boat tour on your first day, visiting some of the  main beaches around the island, such as Dentista, Piedade, Ilhas Botinas, Ilha do Cataguases, Dois Rios, Aventureiro and Saco do Ceu. You will think you’ve landed in the Caribbean once you see the pristing crystal blue and green waters.

At the end of the day, take a stroll around Vila do Abraão, and have dinner at one of the many charming  restaurants in the village, enjoy live music and, get some shopping done at the handful of local shops that sell local crafts and more. For dinner, we recommend Dom Mario restaurant (781 Rua da Praia). There you will delight yourself with delicious seafood, and refreshing drinks This restaurant also has vegetarian options and dishes for meat lovers, in case seafood isn’t your thing.

On the next day, if you are the adventurous type, our recommendation is hike the Trilha do Abraão and the. Pouso trail. You should start this hike early (before the sun gets unbearable). This trail connects Vila do Abraão to one of the most beautiful beach on the island: Lopes Mendes. The hike takes about 2 and a half hours, and at end of it you will find an amazing beach to enjoy the rest of your day. The hike is wholeheartedly worthwhile!
